A city steeped in stories came alive today with the launch of Swansea’s Best Kept Secret, a captivating new audio walk celebrating the rich rail and transport heritage of the area.
Organised by South West Wales Connected and Community Storyworks, the day began with a vibrant preview walk through the heart of Swansea, culminating in a spectacular afternoon gathering at the beautifully restored Palace Theatre.
The walk attracted a diverse and enthusiastic crowd, including representatives from Rail Future Wales, Oystermouth Castle, Volcano Theatre, the Brunel Society, Swansea Tourism, Swansea Museum, Llanelli Goods Shed, Wheelrights, local radio presenters, Swansea Model Railway Club, local authors, artists, and many more supporters of heritage, community, and storytelling.
One of the highlights of the walk was a visit to the historic Tramshed Museum, where the amazing volunteers shared their knowledge and passion with attendees. Their dedication to preserving this vital part of local history is much appreciated…back at The Palace a presentation by Jeff Phillips on his amazing historic art work which is on display at the palace theatre was met with warm applause and heartfelt appreciation.
“This has been an absolute delight,” said Community Rail Officer Eve Sherratt. “To be able to launch this fantastic audio walk around Swansea, highlighting its rich rail history and providing so much insight into the past, is a real privilege. We’re incredibly lucky in Swansea — from our iconic Mumbles Railway to the untold stories of hidden infrastructure and bustling transport hubs of the past — there’s just so much to celebrate. This walk brings it all together in a way that’s engaging, educational, and accessible to all.”
The free, downloadable walk is available now, allowing individuals or small groups to explore Swansea’s rail heritage at their own pace. Organisers also warmly welcome future group bookings, offering guided sessions by arrangement.
“Swansea’s Best Kept Secret” is more than just a walk — it’s a journey through time, a tribute to local pioneers, and a reminder of how community collaboration keeps history alive. With local voices, expert insights, and creative storytelling, this immersive audio experience ensures the city’s remarkable transport past will no longer be forgotten — but cherished for generations to come.
