From Hell to Paradise – A Welshman’s Train Journeys in Europe & America
Opinion
And now for something a bit different! Today we're talking about train journeys, but not in South West Wales! We're giving a shout out for our friend John Davies' new book, "From Hell to Paradise - and a thousand places in between". Capturing John's 60 years of travel and exploration across Europe and North America, this beautiful book is a bit of a time capsule. Starting with a school trip to France in 1958, John takes us on a journey of discovery, relating the details of a lifetime of rail travel, rich with personal observations and amusing anecdotes.

John is a volunteer steering group member of South West Wales Connected, founder of the Swansea Bay Without A Car website, and an expert in all things railway related!  This book is John’s lockdown labour of love, drawing on his meticulous travel journals from the last few decades.  Packed full of photographs, it will be of particular interest to travel and train enthusiasts, but there is also lots here for those of us who love a bit of first hand history and personal perspectives on the changing times!  From the beautiful colours of New England in the autumn, to a filthy Romanian railway sleeping carriage – here are the highs and lows of travel in all their technicolour glory.  I am very much enjoying this book and hope you will too!
